What's on my mind right now?
SUPERBUGS! I'm watching "RX for Survival" on PBS
It's such a strange fascination that I have, being that I can barely stomach medical issues. But as anyone whose read the few blogs I've posted knows, I'm incredibly interested in global health issues. So much so that I'm going to subject myself to chemistry and biology so that I can take microbiology and imnuology.
OH NO. Now I visited the website: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/rxforsurvival/
This could be dangerous. I'm going to have to look at everything...but not right this instant.
I've been reading Thomas Friedman's The World Is Flat, which is a problem because for the most part it just makes me angry. The man is arrogant, plain and simple. He believes that there is one way to conduct business, one way to be successful in politics, one way to advance on an international level...and it's his way. Push over everyone, disregard culture, conform. But there is one part where he talks about social entrepreneurship...and that really struck a chord. It's like when I leared about micro-lendors in Bangladesh--something in me just sits up and says yes! That's what we're supposed to be doing!
But how do they connect? How do we bring together social entrepreneurship--that is, doing business in a way that benefits those in the developed world--and this health care crisis? What is key is education. People need to learn how HIV is transmitted. They need to learn about proper nutrition. But they don't necessarily need someone like me coming in to tell them all this. After all, Peace Corps workers do just that, and I'm sorry, but they're not doing much to slow the AIDS epidemic. It seems what is necessary is for people to come in and train those that live there to teach and train others.
Can I...?
I know that what I'm doing here is not enough. But at the same time I don't know where I'm going yet. So can I just sit for awhile and contemplate? Or should I keep going, even if I'm not sure to where?

Just a recommendation from a Microbiology and Immunology student graduating in a month - it is SO worth being subjected to! :o)
