Starin' At A Car Crash

7:55pm. 5 minutes to K-ville and if you're not in this city you wouldn't believe the hype surrounding this show. How will it reflect on New Orleans? Will it be good for the city's reputation or manage to tarnish it even more? Even if it doesn't show the city at its best, should we try to keep it on the air because it's good for the local economy?

I've got my sparkle water and my blanket (it's down to high eighties as the high and sixties for the low!), the ceiling fan's on and I'm ready to tune in. Expect some updates through my texting date.

8:21pm. Machine guns? A shooting in the French Quarter in broad daylight? Is this the real perception of New Orleans? The FQ is probably the safest place in any city in the states (unless you fear alcohol and nudity). LA State troopers are stationed there all the time. There wouldn't be a daylight shooting in the FQ, particularly not of a well-known musician. Oops I think it's back.

8:30pm and the Saints visa commercial (I don't know if that's regional or what) was more accurate than the first half hour of the show. A shooting in Jackson Square? No one can get through traffic quick enough to shoot there! Not just vehicular traffic but pedestrian traffic. It would be nearly impossible. And let's just point out that there are no plantation houses in New Orleans. The rich white girl ain't living in the city!

A few things. Don't worry about our toxic sludge...what was that? This city smells of night blooming jasmine and rain and sometimes an after-party. But toxic sludge? No. The protest about horrible schools after Katrina? They were the worst in the country pre-K.

Back to it.

8:40pm and there are a lot of commercials in this. I don't know about stealing street signs. I haven't heard that one yet, nor have I heard about youths stealing trees for landscape purposes. I do know that people go around stripping houses in poor areas of original moldings, etc and selling them to those who have to make their houses fit in with the standards of the historical society. I also know that street signs are fairly rare in many areas of the city--though much more common than they were a year and a half ago. Are they gone to confuse the cops? I have no idea. I thought it was just part of after the storm.

Bathroom time.

8:49pm and these commercials are ridiculous. However, the attitude about the 9th ward rebuilding isn't--unfortunately, quite a few people don't want the ninth rebuilt. They believe it's a crime-ridden hellhole which spills over to color the beautifulness of the rest of the city. That's ignorant at best, ridiculous and racist being a more accurate description.

9:01 and too lazy to count my texts but E and I had a fun time ripping that show apart. I don't know...I guess that the filming did bring some always-needed revenue to the city, but if people believe they'll be shot in the tourist areas that's not the best way to promote New Orleans. It did a fairly good job of showing some of the psychological problems that plague people post-storm, though. I don't know...I love to see the city on TV but I don't want it to be just another bad image.

Did anyone out there watch it that doesn't live here?

Auntie #2 says: I saw an ad for this show...but I don't remember what network shows it.

K-ville is a cop-drama centered on life in NOLA after the storm (hence K-ville, or Katrina-ville). The city is supposed to be a main character, but they're screwing up her traits.
