The Smell of Summer After She Rains

I absolutely cannot concentrate today. And I'm craving Sonic like no other, so I'm trying to distract myself, because I know that Sonic will not help my concentration or really satisfy me for very long. But tots...mmmm...and apple limeade.
Anyway, I wanted to give a few details about my 4th of July weekend. I'm not as quick on the updates as my auntie, but I feel that less than ten days is an acceptable turnaround.
So for anyone who does not know, I traveled south for the fourth, and met up with B and his family in Baton Rouge. And when I say family I mean family. I now know how he felt, meeting so much of mine, and that's when we were fairly new. Both of his parents grew up in BR, so that meant grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins--and not all of them were in town!
The weekend started when I met his dad's parents, who are very nice and very laid-back. But then we picked up and moved over to his mom's mom's house...and that's when things got interesting. Now, I like his grandma, I really do. But her world is definitely not one I'm used to. First of all, she has a three-story townhouse on a lake, complete with elevator and a room for her dolls. I had the complete tour, and I think she was happy to have someone to show it off to, since her husband passed away a couple years ago. It was impressive, and although I definitely want to live on water someday, I can't see myself in a home like this, full of antiques and knick-knacks.
Then we were off to Whole Foods, where we met up with B's mom and we all did some shopping for the weekend. Let me say, his grandmother is quite generous, as she paid for our rather expensive groceries (I do enjoy my sparkling water!). But now I'm better stocked for next fall, and my new cabinets are going to enjoy their new foods.
That evening we attempted to watch The Constant Gardener, but that's a movie you really have to concentrate for and there were kids and parents all over the place. So we moved from the townhouse to the other grandparents to the aunts house where five of us were sleeping. I had the joy of sharing a room with Caroline, who likes to toss and turn.
The next day we experienced some joys and frustrations of a large family, such as all trying to meet up in one place for dinner. We did have some excellent greek food, but missed out on delicious cajun food. Then we went to grandmother's next-door neighbor's house--three times the size of hers and looking as though it could double as a museum. Yep, a zebra. And they had a pool built into their deck so they could sit in the pool and stare at the lake. Wow.
The next day we wanted to escape, and so we headed to New Orleans, where we had the incredible sushi that I already talked about. Better than Ezra fans will appreciate this photo: Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting WWOZ is an icon in NO, and it was a big deal when it came back on the air after Katrina. We also went to my favorite place in the city Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting and that's how you consume a beignet without dumping sugar all over yourself. And we saw an impressive balloon artist Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Yes, those are parrots on the pirates' shoulders.
Tuesday was the fourth, and on that day we headed to grandmother's other lakefront home. Here's her view Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting It was beautiful, and we spent a good amount of time in the water. That's when I learned what it really means to be part of a large family. On the way out of BR, we'd stopped to buy floats for the lake, and B said that we'd just have a relaxing day drifting on the water. Uh, NO. The boys (he has 5 bros, but one wasn't there) finally decided that they aren't scared of me, and they celebrated by throwing me off my raft repeatedly. First they went for Caroline, and when B told them to stop it was me that got dumped off my raft.
Here's a photo of Caroline and I matching in front of the sign for the house Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Oh, and the new photo for my blog is a photograph of the sidewalk outside the French Market.

I remember watching a show on Food Network, with Emma of course, and they showed that restaurant. Its pretty impressive that B can consume a beignet without getting the sug everywhere.
